Puppy Training

at Big House K9 Training

Ensuring early socialization for puppies is essential for their well-being. Research shows that puppies raised without proper interaction with other dogs and people are more prone to developing behavior problems like fear-based aggression. For years, many dog owners have been advised to keep their puppies isolated at home to protect them from infectious diseases. This presents a tough choice: stay home and risk future behavioral issues, or venture out and face potential illness.

However, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) has released a position statement encouraging socialization before puppies are fully vaccinated. The AVSAB recommends supervised socialization in controlled environments, which helps puppies thrive mentally while remaining safe from health risks.

For more information, check out the full AVSAB statement.

What is Puppy Wellness?

IMG_1678.jpg

Puppy wellness involves considering all aspects of a puppy's health—both physical and emotional. Every puppy owner knows that their pet has a unique personality and needs attention in multiple areas to grow into a balanced, happy dog. Serious behavioral issues, such as anxiety, can harm both the dog and those around it. By focusing on the overall well-being of your puppy, you can set them up for long-term success and happiness.

Why Join Puppy Kindergarten Socialization Classes?

Some pet owners might hesitate to enroll their puppy in socialization classes, remembering advice from years ago about the dangers of exposing them too early. However, veterinary medicine has evolved, and the latest vaccines are much more effective. Puppies can now attend socialization classes as early as eight weeks old, provided these sessions are conducted in a clean and controlled environment.

The key socialization window for puppies is between three and twelve weeks of age. After this period, puppies may become less adaptable to new experiences, which can lead to behavioral challenges later on. At Big House K9, our socialization classes start at eight weeks of age, and you will need to bring proof of vaccination to enroll. As your puppy receives each vaccination, you'll need to submit the updated records.

Training and Socialization: A Dual Approach

Training is crucial for puppies—covering essentials like housebreaking, crate training, and basic commands. But training classes also serve a deeper purpose: constant socialization. At Big House K9, our classes focus on exposing your puppy to new people, places, sounds, and experiences in a calm, positive environment. This helps your puppy learn that the world around them is safe and enjoyable, reducing the likelihood of fear or anxiety later in life.

We use only positive reinforcement techniques, with rewards like praise, toys, treats, and affection to help reinforce good behavior. This creates a strong, positive association with the new experiences they encounter in class.

Safe Socialization Matters!

Not all forms of puppy socialization are the same. It's crucial to choose controlled environments for your puppy to interact with others. For instance, dog parks or unfamiliar outdoor spaces can expose your puppy to health risks. At Big House K9, our Puppy Kindergarten takes place in a safe, clean indoor setting, led by professional trainers. All puppies in the class are up-to-date on their vaccinations, ensuring a healthy environment for your pet to learn and grow.

Our goal is to give puppies the best possible start, helping them become well-adjusted, happy dogs. It's easier to start your puppy on the right path with early socialization than to deal with behavioral issues later. Whether at Big House K9 or another trusted facility, we strongly encourage you to begin safe socialization after your puppy's first round of vaccinations, around eight weeks old.

There’s a world of positive experiences waiting for your puppy—don’t wait to let them explore!
